O.K. this isn't even close to Columbia. But it is well worth the detour if you want to stay and dine at what is arguably the finest, world-class hotel/restaurant in South Carolina. Summerville is about 100 miles from Columbia on I-26. The only problem we ever had here was when a large group was checked-in overnight for a wedding. The guy next door called my room at 3 AM to ask in a very threatening tone if his wife was with me. I told him that my wife was with me and that was all I ever needed, thank you. I called the desk clerk, who seemed unconcerned, to report the incident. We'd prefer that the Woodlands not have groups of any kind. They are out of place here. This is a Relais et Chateau property.  Dogs are accepted. Rooms run from $295 to $395. Dinner from $59 to $135.
